While feng-shui (literally, wind-water) is not an exact science, its roots are certainly not based on mindless superstition. Here are a few key insights into the art of feng shui and some tips on implementing it in your home!
Feng shui is about creating an environment that’s cohesive to living a balanced, prosperous, and abundant life. There are 5 elements that are used to create harmony and balance positive/negative energy. Wood, water, metal, fire, and earth. Each of these represents a different characteristic:
Wood —> growth, wealth
Water —> connection, wisdom
Metal —> focus, precision
Fire —> inspiration, passion
Earth —> nourishment, self-care
Here are a few practical feng shui tips you can apply to your life immediately:
- Enjoy fresh flowers in your living room on a weekly basis!
- Declutter! This is essential to creating an environment for conducive thinking. If you have kids at home, you can make a game out of it!
- Ensure your furniture is evenly spaced out and allows ease of walking.
- Try not to have your main entrance open to a solid wall-in case it does, place a mirror.
- Avoid having the backs of chairs/ couches face the door.
- Make sure you can see your door from your bed- ideally it should be offset at an angle and not directly opposite your door.
- Add plants near your workspace but avoid fake plants at all costs. Use silk flowers if you can’t find fresh flowers. Avoid cacti.
- Fix any squeaky doors.
- Opt for a round or oval dining table. If that is not an option, round the corners.
- Never place your handbag on the floor. Have a designated spot for it.
- Avoid spaces in between stairs no matter how chic they look- they allow for the dissipation of positive energy.
- Try not to hang anything in your kitchen above head level.
- Avoid overhead beams in your bedroom.
